The Scion of the Descendant of the Oldest Vine in the World - A Symbol of Friendship

The old vine is a symbol of mutual cooperation and friendship. Every year, the city of Maribor donates cuttings of the oldest vine in the world to partner municipalities and institutions in Slovenia and abroad.

In Ruše, we planted a scion of an old vine on World Earth Day, April 22, 2016, at the beginning of Vinska Pot.

The guardian of the offspring or the vintner is Mr. Leopold Rudl, winegrower with recommendations and many years of experience, at home on the Wine Route. His work and responsibilities:

  • on the feast of St. Vincenzo (January 22) cuts the rose and brings it to the master and reports to him or submits a report on work in the previous year;
  • cut in spring;
  • year-round care in accordance with the rules of the profession;
  • on St. Urban's Day (May 25) report to the master about the condition of the vine (is it already blooming, how far is it to flowering...);
  • determine the harvest time;
  • invite to harvest;
  • take care of the pressing and later for the care of must and wine;
  • make an agreement with the owner regarding the delivery of the wine;
  • keep a log of tasks and events along the vine.

The old vine that grows in Maribor is more than 400 years old and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world.

The grapes of the Old Vine are of the Zametovka or Blue Couchina varieties. It is one of the oldest domesticated noble wine varieties in Slovenia. The wine that is pressed from its grapes is one of the most special and rare drinks in the world and is light rose-colored, gentle, and drinkable, with a low alcohol level.
